Ok, a quick note on treating a patellar tendinopathy versus a quadriceps tendinopathy.



1) You get a referral for Jumper's Knee and expect somebody with patellar tendinopathy to walk through the door.


2) However, when you start the assessment, you realise they are pointing to pain ABOVE the kneecap.


3) Do you still give them the usual patellar tendon loading program?


No.


Because you read these Research Updates, you know that the patellar and quad tendons are not equally loaded throughout the knee's range of motion.


As you increase knee flexion, you increase the load on the quad tendon.




This means you can preferentially load the quadriceps tendon more than the patellar tendon by activating the quadriceps in deeper knee flexion.


This is why people with quadriceps tendinopathy have the most pain when they are in a deep squat.
