Could you improve shoulder impingement symptoms simply by improving hand grip strength?

Weirdly enough, it seems like you can.​

This is a technique I learned from 4-time strength champion Edgar Katushabe in his Strength Secrets Masterclass.

Ed has coached athletes to 4 World records and 21 national records, so when he started discussing irradiation techniques, I immediately knew this was worth learning about.

Once again, we're crushing cutting edge research released in March 2022.​

AlAnazi and colleagues compared two groups of patients that were diagnosed with Primary Subacromial Impingement Syndrome.​

  • The one group followed a traditional approach with ultrasound, ice and stretching.

  • The other group followed the same treatment but with one additional exercise.

They added 3 sets of 10 hand grip strengthening squeezes.

  • In weeks 1 and 2, the squeezes were done at 30° of abduction.

  • In weeks 3 and 4, they were done at 60° of abduction.

  • In weeks 5 and 6, it moved up to 90°.

  • In the final weeks of 7 and 8, they ended by adding a 90° bend of the elbow.

I found it fascinating that this actually made a significant difference.​

This group had a greater improvement in their shoulder pain, function, strength and range of motion than the traditional group.

According to the authors (as well as Edgar), this is due to the neurological connection between handgrip and rotator cuff strength.

Hand grip strengthening exercises have been shown in previous studies to improve the activation of rotator cuff muscles while REDUCING activation of the middle and anterior portions of the deltoid.​

If you think that your patient’s rotator cuff issues may be coming from an imbalance between shoulder muscles, then adding this exercise to your arsenal could be an absolute game-changer.​
